Zadig & Voltaire

Luxury and grit meet in seamless harmony at Zadig & Voltaire, where soft fabrics and easy silhouettes are combined with a rock ’n’ roll–inspired urban edge. Think: cashmere sweaters adorned with crystal skulls, biker boots with gladiator detailing, and fringed leather tops. The Paris-based designer, named for the philosopher Voltaire and the alter ego featured in his writings, also offers an extensive men’s line featuring casual but refined clothes from cargo pants and faded cotton tees to dress shirts and blazers. Perfect for: a live show at Belly Up.

Theory

Having just moved from the space it occupied since 2011 on Galena Street to the brand-spanking-new, super-visible front of the recently finished Aspen One building (so long, Gap, we really will miss you!), Theory has expanded its offering of women’s clothing and accessories to include a complete men’s line. Known for a contemporary take on the classics, Theory continues to deliver those can’t-live-without suit staples (shirt, jacket, pants, skirt) but with a luxury twist and modern cut that somehow strikes a balance between timeless and current. Perfect for: a decent jacket for him to wear to a wedding on top of Aspen Mountain.

Panerai

An Italian watchmaker that originated in Florence in the late 1800s and built watches for the Royal Italian Navy, Panerai still produces timepieces with a distinct nautical styling. They couldn’t be farther from the ocean in Aspen, but they are here—very prominently—at the corner building on the west end of the Hyman Pedestrian Mall. Large dials that only display 12, 3, 6, and 9 and lever devices that protect the winding crown are the Panerai’s trademarks. There’s no doubt these are luxury watches (the premier piece on display in the Aspen store goes for $70,000), but they’re also known for functionality and durability. Perfect for: impressing your next big client.

Rag & Bone

The arrival of Marcus Wainwright and David Neville’s brand in Aspen is a turning point in the local boutique lineup: it’s a shift from more traditional luxury brands to a British design duo’s undeniable, effortless cool. Clean silhouettes with a downtown sensibility are hallmarks of the wearable but precisely crafted line. It’s a welcome departure from the logo-laden luxury that’s dominated Aspen for way too long. Perfect for: a leisurely afternoon of sipping lattes and people watching on the patio at Peach’s.
