This view can be yours ... for $4,950 a night at the Roaring Fork Log Cabin with a private staircase down to the Rio Grande Trail.

We love staying in an eclectic Airbnb when we travel, and after hearing the news about their free housing offer for refugees this week, we love the company even more.

However, here’s a hot tip for hosts: the sharing economy pioneer announced that starting on February 1, it will begin collecting Colorado state taxes. The new policy builds upon existing tax agreements already in place in five cities (including Snowmass Village) and, according to a statement, is designed to “expand the pie for ordinary people. With 22,000 listings in the state, the annual earnings for a typical host is $6,600 statewide.” Adds Jasmine Mora, an Airbnb spokeswoman, “From paying taxes to boosting local tourism in little-known places, our hosts and guests are committed to being good neighbors and strengthening their communities.”

Aspen and Snowmass are, of course, anything but little-known towns, with rentals here tipping the per-night scale at $17,000 (there are endless more affordable options, too). Airbnb’s rise to popularity over the past few years has also affected the affordable-housing crunch facing the Aspen Skiing Company, as “more property owners are using Airbnb and other online services to rent out their units for higher dollars,” Philip Jeffreys, a project manager for SkiCo who works on affordable-housing issues, told the Aspen Times.

All controversy aside, there are few better destinations to find the most epic of Airbnb options for your next mountain getaway. Here, we round up the best homes away from home to experience Aspen and Snowmass like a local … a really fancy local.
