Aspen Weekend Agenda: April 14-16, 2017

Aspen Mountain opens for sunset skiing, Ute Mountaineer celebrates 40 years, the International Ocean Film Tour hits the Wheeler, Snowmass celebrates closing day, and Ajax Tavern puts on its final patio party of the season.

The International Film Tour presents seven sports and conservation films on Friday night at the Wheeler Opera House.

Friday, April 14

Sunset Skiing & Sundeck Party
4 p.m.–9:30 p.m., Aspen Mountain
Ski Ajax Mountain until the sun sets, then head up to the Sundeck for a party under the stars. Drop in for drink specials, à la carte food options, dancing, and a live DJ. Free, aspensnowmass.com  

Ute Mountaineer 40th Anniversary Party
4–8 p.m., Ute Mountaineer

Art Affair
5–7 p.m., Charles J. Wyly Gallery, Basalt
The Charles J. Wyly Gallery at the Art Base and Carbondale Clay Center present Art Affair, comprising 10 prominent local artists in a collaborative group exhibition. Participating artists include Doug Casebeer, Nicole Kinsler, K Rhynus Cesark, Reina Katzenberger, Matthew Eames, Jay Phillips, Molly Peacock, Jill Sabella, Amanda Ramsay, and Chris Erickson. Free, theartbase.org 

International Ocean Film Tour 
6:30 p.m., Wheeler Opera House
The International Ocean Film Tour wraps the most powerful stories, inspiring protagonists, and stunning visuals into a 120-minute film program documenting the wide spectrum of the ocean experience. The program includes short documentaries highlighting ocean conservation, water sports, and sea adventures. $15, aspenshowtix.com

Saturday, April 15

Snowmass Spring Fling
11:30 a.m.–7 p.m., Snowmass Mountain & Base Village
Ahead of the official closing day (April 16), celebrate another stellar season at Snowmass at its beach-themed bash. Closing day festivities include a Surf and Snow Party at Elk Camp (swimsuits encouraged!), pig roast, live music at Venga Venga and Gwyn’s High Alpine, a Spring Fling Beach Party in Base Village, après specials, and end-of-season deals from local retailers. Free, gosnowmass.com

Young Curators of the Roaring Fork
3 p.m., Aspen Art Museum
Since 2005, the AAM’s Young Curators of the Roaring Fork  has engaged high school students in a six-month program that builds aesthetic valuation, leadership, and organizational and critical-thinking skills. After participants lead a call for submissions, identify a theme, and assemble the exhibition, an opening is held to celebrate this student-driven initiative. The exhibit will be up through the end of the month.

Known for her gritty musical portrayals of unchampioned lives, the singer-songwriter has earned accolades for her own honest and melodic performances as well as songs she's written for others; "Girl Crush" won best country song las year. $35, aspenshowtix.com 

Live Comedy 
9:30 p.m., Justice Snow's
Denver-based comedian Spencer James brings his routine of warped reactions to first-time relationships–a result of a sort of “fat kid syndrome” he’s had throughout his adult life—as well as his Ugly Duckling persona to the stage. He also plays the Marble Distilling Company in Carbondale earlier in the evening (7:30 p.m.). Free, justicesnows.com

Sunrise Easter Service
8:30 am, Aspen Mountain
The Aspen Chapel hosts its 30th annual observation of Easter. Led by Reverend Nicholas Vesey, the service includes a live performance from Mack Bailey and Ellen Stapenhorst, and Gregg Anderson carrying on the "Hokey Pokey" tradition. Ajax Tavern Closing Day Luau
2:30 p.m.–6 p.m., Ajax Tavern
Say goodbye to Aspen's slopeside patio for the season at its final aprés-ski party. It's a Hawaiian themed–bash, so come sporting your best island style with leis, grass skirts, and aloha spirit. Beats come courtesy of DJ Dylan. Free, with full menu available for purchase, aspensnowmass.com
