Bluebird Art + Sound starts in Snowmass, Aspen Music Festival's season gets underway, Wilderness Workshop takes over Owl Farm, ACES Raptor Fair invades Hallam Lake, Writ Large hits the Wheeler Opera House, and more.

Snowmass's newest addition to the summer schedule kicks off with the Drive-By Truckers and takes over Fanny Hill and Base Village through Sunday for its inaugural festival, which promises a unique blend of rock, electronic music, fine art, and cutting-edge immersive multimedia experiences. Free (except for the Drive-By Truckers concert on Friday, $30), gosnowmass.com 

Aspen Chamber Symphony
6 p.m., Benedict Music Tent

The Los Angeles Times called them a “star combo” at the Hollywood Bowl: Conductor Ludovic Morlot and violinist Simone Porter join forces for the season’s first Aspen Chamber Symphony concert. $80, aspenmusicfestival.com  

Hairspray
7:30 p.m., Hurst Theatre

Get your beehives ready for the Tony Award–winning musical based on the 1988 John Waters film. The Theatre Aspen production will be helmed by director and choreographer Mark Martino, whose Hurst Theatre credits also include Les Misérables, Cabaret, and Mamma Mia! Hairspray begins previews today, opens June 27, and runs through August 19. From $29, theatreaspen.org 

Movies at the Museum
8 p.m., Aspen Art Museum

Enjoy open-air cinema in the Roof Deck Sculpture Garden with a screening of Charlie Chaplin's The Kid (1921) and a special performance from Marc Ribot, who will present a live guitar score to the classic silent film. Ribot, who Rolling Stone describes as “emotive, graceful, but with a glint of mischief in his method,” has released more than 20 albums and performed with Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, Elvis Costello, and more. Free, aspenartmuseum.org 

Chris Robinson Brotherhood
9 p.m., Belly Up Aspen

Belly Up regular Chris Robinson of Black Crowes fame returns with what Rolling Stone calls “a band more musical, soulful, and downright fun than his previous brotherhood.” From $38, bellyupaspen.com

Jazz Aspen Snowmass and the Aspen Music Festival and School co-present this reprisal of a sold-out show at Harlem’s Apollo Theater that celebrated what would have been Ella Fitzgerald’s centennial birthday. Wilderness Workshop’s 4th Annual Wildfest
5–10 p.m., Owl Farm

The family-friendly celebration is going Gonzo again with its annual fundraiser at the late Hunter S. Thompson’s spread in Woody Creek. This year's live music lineup includes Pearl & Wood, the Railsplitters, and World's Finest, with a keynote address from Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club. The Slow Groovin’ BBQ truck will be parked all night selling food, along with a cash bar, kids’ zone, communal mural creation station, and a wind-down fire-dance at the end of the night. $45, wildernessworkshop.org

Aspen’s Old Fashioned Fourth of July
8 a.m.–9:15 p.m., Downtown Aspen

It doesn’t get more “Main Street USA” than our own, so scope out a spot and camp out as the antique cars, firetrucks, horses, musicians and more march through town. The celebration brings over 20,000 locals and visitors together and continues all day with Boogie's Buddy Race, a “Birthday Carnival” in Paepcke Park, AVSC’s picnic in Koch Park, and a free concert at the Benedict Music Tent by the Aspen Music Festival and School’s band. Sadly, the lack of rain and hot temperatures have forced the cancellation of the annual Fourth of July fireworks show on Aspen Mountain. Free, aspen4th.com

Snowmass’ new sunset Fourth of July event, the Community Celebration features plenty of family-friendly, festive happenings including music from DJ Berkel Beats, sweet treats from the Sled, glow-in-the-dark games, and more.
