Colorado Scottish Festival

A Friday night free concert (6:30 p.m.) by Irish band Ruaile Buaile kicks off a festive weekend in Snowmass celebrating all things Gaelic. Base village will be awash in tartan, as bagpipes, drummers, Highland dancers, caber throwers, and more perform, accompanied by a living history tent, whiskey tastings ($25), a Saturday night ceilidh, and a parade of dogs of the British Isles. Free, gosnowmass.com 

Art Aspen 
12–7 p.m., Aspen Ice Garden

With 30 notable dealers on hand from around the country and the Aspen Ice Garden transformed into a sleek contemporary gallery, this annual show is a must-see for serious collectors and modern art enthusiasts alike. $25 (single day admission), art-aspen.com 

Aspen Chamber Symphony
6 p.m., Benedict Music Tent

In this program, thrill to the pianistic pyrotechnics in Liszt’s Rhapsodie espagnole, a work inspired by a trip to Spain and Portugal and later arranged by Busoni for soloist and orchestra. Also enjoy the rare treat of a Frank Martin work showcasing this season’s brilliant wind players, and, finally, give over to Brahms’s stirring Third Symphony, which abounds in beautiful writing for the clarinet, cello, and horn. $80, aspenmusicfestival.com 

Hairspray
7:30 p.m., Hurst Theatre

Get your beehives ready for the Tony Award–winning musical based on the 1988 John Waters film. The Theatre Aspen production will be helmed by director and choreographer Mark Martino, whose Hurst Theatre credits also include Les Misérables, Cabaret, and Mamma MiaHairspray runs through August 19. From $29, theatreaspen.org 

Compagnie Marie Chouinard
8 p.m., Aspen District Theatre

Presented by the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, this Montreal-based modern ensemble performs Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring and 24 Preludes by Chopin, both choreographed by company founder Chouinard in ways that bring new life to these classic works. From $36, aspensantafeballet.com

In addition to racing 33 miles across the four ski mountains, bikers must tackle almost 9,000 feet of elevation change in this ultimate test of endurance (there's also a Power of Two option); runners ,meanwhile, vie in 10, 25, or 50K races, or a vertical K up Aspen Mountain. Aspen Saturday Market

The best way to spend a summer Saturday morning in Aspen? At the U-shaped farmer’s market in the heart of town, perusing plenty of locally grown produce, handmade crafts, jewelry, and souvenirs. Free, aspenchamber.org 

The World According to Snoopy
10 a.m., Hurst Theatre

Theatre Aspen’s production of the new musical features Charles Schulz’s iconic Peanuts characters, under the guidance of that consummate showman Snoopy, as they sing and dance their way through witty philosophies about love and life as only the Peanuts gang can. $25, theatreaspen.org

Music on the Mountain

Beyond the Benedict Music Tent, the Aspen Music Festival and School students perform a repertoire of their own choosing every Saturday through August at 11,000 feet. Pack a blanket and hit the Butcher’s Block before you go for supplies to picnic in the gorgeous meadow—a short walk out Richmond Ridge at the top of Aspen Mountain. Free with the purchase of a gondola ticket ($22), aspensnowmass.com 

Aspen Historical Society Ice Cream Social

During this new Aspen Sojourner-sponsored event, held in conjunction with the three annual art fairs in town during the summer (Aspen Antiques, Jewelry and Fine Arts Fair on July 8), participating art galleries offer cocktails and bites. Take a hike up Ajax; once you make the summit, nothing beats a cold beer and a free open-air concert on top of the world as a reward.
