Times and venues vary through Sunday, Aspen

The annual weeklong tribute to the legendary Aspenite is already underway with nightly sing-a-longs at the Mountain Chalet, meet-and-greets, intimate concerts, and more. The banner tribute concerts on Friday and Saturday night at the Wheeler Opera House are the hottest ticket in town, with the celebration culminating in Wagner Park for a farewell gathering on Sunday. Prices vary, johndenvercelebration.com

"Chromosphere" Opening Reception

The Charles J. Wyly Gallery at the Art Base and Shannon Murphy Landscape Architects presents "Chromosphere," a site-specific exhibition by Aspen artist and landscape architect Lisa Caplan. The exhibition runs through November 4. Free, theartbase.org

Dead Man’s Cellphone
7:30 p.m., Thunder River Theatre Company, Carbondale

Thunder River Theatre Company (TRTC), winner of two 2017 Colorado Theatre Guild Henry Awards, opens its 2017–2018 season with the romantic comedy Dead Man’s Cell Phone. Directed by TRTC executive artistic director Corey Simpson, the play takes a humorous look at technology’s ability to create feelings of love, connection, and isolation in the digital age. Written by Sarah Ruhl, it received the Helen Hayes award for Outstanding New Play. $25, thunderrivertheatre.com

Forest Gardening & Greenhouse Workshop
9 a.m.5 p.m.,, Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute, Basalt

Get your hands dirty in CRMPI's 30 year old, one-acre outdoor edible forest garden for a one- or two-day workshop covering the basics of forest gardening, including successful companion planting for the high Rockies, design considerations, getting started, and upkeep. Participants will also learn the intricacies and design of greenhouse growing with an emphasis on perennial poly-culture and making the most of your space. Both full day sessions are taught by CRMPI founder Jerome Osentowski. $150 (Saturday), $300 (Saturday & Sunday), crmpi.org 

Family Workshop
10 a.m., Aspen Art Museum

These drop-in sessions are designed to provide children and adults an opportunity to explore the galleries and create works of art of their own. Families are encouraged to communicate, reflect, and produce as artists together. Workshops begin in the Education Workshop, giving families choices for self-guided or Educator-led activities and art-making stations. This month in partnership with Ascendigo Autism Services, AAM will host an additional special session (9 a.m.) focused on a a sensory-friendly guided gallery tour. All Family Workshops are first come, first served for families with children ages 3–10 and also include refreshments. Free, aspenartmuseum.org

ACES Harvest Party
12–4 p.m., Rock Bottom Ranch

A picture perfect celebration of fall features lunch by Smoke Modern BBQ and live music by the Caleb Dean Band with guests of all ages enjoying pumpkin carving, apple cider pressing, farm tours, face painting, traditional ranch games, dancing, and a silent auction to benefit ACES Ed. As one of the area’s oldest non-profit organizations, ACES is supported by its members to provide educational offerings in the areas of ecological literacy, forest health, agriculture, and more. $20 (adults), $10 (kids) aspennature.org

Aspen Camp "It Still Amazes Me" Tribute Concert
4 p.m., Limelight Hotel

In conjunction with the John Denver Celebration, Aspen Meadow Band pays tribute to the golden anniversary of Aspen Camp for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing singing through five decades of song. Add some laughter, a few "happy tears," and some stories and sentiments along the way, it promises to be an inspirational and heartfelt thank you to all who have sustained the vision and work of the camp. Free, aspencamp.org

A portion of the proceeds from the 20th Anniversary John Denver Celebration will benefit the Rocky Mountain Foundation for the Performing Arts, which raises money for music education scholarships for students in Colorado.
