Aspen Filmfest

Aspen Film presents its 39th annual Aspen Filmfest featuring 20 narrative and documentary films from the international festival circuit. Fest-goers can walk up to most screenings at the Isis Theatre and Wheeler Opera House in Aspen or the Crystal Theatre in Carbondale, but grab tickets in advance for the always-anticipated Surprise Film (Sunday, 8:15 p.m., Wheeler Opera House). The Meeting

Now in its 13th year, the Meeting is an all-out celebration of snow stoke to warm up for the season ahead. Presented by GoPro, the event, hosted by the Aspen Skiing Company, will again serve up an epic weekend of film, music, conference sessions, concerts, and exclusive outdoor adventures. Red Butte Cemetery Tour

Learn about Aspen history on a stroll through the town’s storied Red Butte Cemetery and hear about the lives of some of its most notable residents. $15, aspenhistory.org

First Friday: Homecoming & Harvest Fest

This month’s First Friday includes a closing reception for “Homecoming: A site-specific installation by Lara Whitley” and “Pattern Recognition: Observations and Explorations by Lindsay Jones” at The Launchpad and Harvest Fest, an annual family block party. Free, carbondale.com

Poetry Reading with Jodie Hollander

Join Jodie Hollander, recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship in South Africa, a National Endowment for the Humanities Grant in Italy, and a Hawthorrnden Fellowship in Scotland, as she reads excerpts from her book Dark Horses, with an additional reading by local poet Tony Alcantara. The next day (10 a.m.–2 p.m.), Hollander will give a workshop at the library that focuses on the significance of place in poetry.  Free, basaltlibrary.org

Dead Man’s Cellphone

Thunder River Theatre Company (TRTC), winner of two 2017 Colorado Theatre Guild Henry Awards, opens its 2017–2018 season with the romantic comedy Dead Man’s Cell Phone. Directed by TRTC executive artistic director Corey Simpson, the play takes a humorous look at technology’s ability to create feelings of love, connection, and isolation in the digital age. Written by Sarah Ruhl, it received the Helen Hayes award for Outstanding New Play. $25, thunderrivertheatre.com

Potato Day Parade and Celebration
10:30 a.m.–3 p.m., Sopris Park, Carbondale

Since 1909, local farming and ranching families have kept their traditions alive with a parade down Main Street, a BBQ, potato sack races, food vendors, and family-friendly activities, making it the longest-standing annual community event in Carbondale. Free, carbondale.com

Magician Doc Murdock
3 p.m., The Temporary at the Arts Campus at Willits, Basalt

Part of TACAW's Kids Kulture! series, Doc Murdock presents a mixture of amazement, fun, and awe, with many original and classic baffling feats of legerdemain (that's fancy speak for magic ). Both kids and parents will love his wondrous act, which that has a healthy dose of "twilight zone" comic surprise. $5, tacaw.org

Art Heist & Speakeasy
5:30–10 p.m., The Launchpad and Batch, Carbondale

Head to the home of the Carbondale Arts and Dance Initiative for an evening of high jinks and thievery. The fundraiser begins in the R2 Gallery with a Champagne preview for the “thieves,” then moves into a cocktail party with appetizers by Tiny Chef, live music, surprise entertainment, and, of course, the Art Heist (your chance to steal great artwork right off the walls of the R2 Gallery). The evening ends across the alley with a speakeasy at Batch, featuring a dinner by Mark Fischer; a secret code is required for entry. The Ellyn Rucker Jazz Trio

A talented bop-based pianist and sensuous singer, Ellyn Rucker has long been a fixture in the Denver area. She started playing piano when she was eight, discovered jazz at 13, and studied classical piano at Drake University. Rucker has toured Europe several times, recorded several albums, has a full-length video on Leisure Jazz, and performed at many festivals. $12, tacaw.org
