Aspen Weekend Agenda: February 23-25, 2018

Aspen Laugh Festival comes to town, cinema continues at the library, electronic dance music hits the Belly Up, plus much more this weekend.

Friday Morning Uphill Breakfast Club
 
8:45–10 a.m., Cliffhouse Restaurant, Buttermilk

New this year, uphill skiers are able to enjoy breakfast in the restaurant after hiking up the mountain every Friday. The Cliffhouse breakfast will be available for purchase with coffee, tea and hot chocolate, an oatmeal and yogurt station featuring dry quick oats in a mason jar and a toppings bar filled with healthy add-ons. Aspen Snowmass Freeskiing Open

Some 200 amateur and pro-level athletes will jump, spin, and flip on Buttermilk’s slopestyle course, in the superpipe, and over the big-air jump in this long-running comp. It’s like the X Games—without the hype. Free, aspensnowmass.com

History Ski Tour
 
11 a.m. & 1 p.m., Aspen Mountain

Learn about the amazing mining and ski history lying literally beneath your feet as you tour Aspen Mountain with a long time local historian. Meets at Guest Services cabin below the gondola at the top. Free with lift ticket ($94), aspenhistory.org

The increasingly popular comedy fest features a mix of established comics and up-and-comers, including the Second City sketch comedy troupe, Paula Poundstone (who recently released the book The Totally Unscientific Study of the Search for Human Happiness), SNL “Weekend Update” co-anchor Colin Jost, notorious roaster Jeff Ross, Comedy Central regular and storyteller extraordinaire Mike Birbiglia, and recent Showtime comedy special performer Tiffany Haddish (who also recently hosted SNL). New this year: free après comedy hours at Silver City Mountain Saloon. $40–$75, wheeleroperahouse.com

Ullr Nights
 
5–9 p.m., Snowmass

Bundle up and ride the Snowmass gondola ($10) to some family-friendly snow play, including the new Breathtaker mountain coaster and lift-served tubing ($49 for a two-hour activities pass to access both; reserve in advance), free ice skating, free snowshoe tours with a guide from the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (6 and 7:30 p.m.), snowbiking ($72 guided rides for ages 12 and up, free minibikes for younger kids), and climbing and sliding on a massive snow sculpture. Colorado Art Beat Film Series + Art Exhibition Opening Reception
 
6-8 p.m., Carbondale Art’s R2 Gallery in The Launchpad

This documentary film series and art exhibit recognizes five Colorado-based artists – Gregory Block, Robert Burch, Linda Girvin, Joshua Goss, and Sara Ransford. Presented by Carbondale Arts and produced by Chris and Heather Macdonald of FuseMedia, Colorado ArtBeat Film Series + Art Exhibition hosts its opening reception this evening. The six-time 2010 Tony Award–winning play Red comes to Colorado Mountain College’s Spring Valley campus. The play is based off a true story about Mark Rothko, the abstract expressionist who struggled to commercialize his art in a series of murals he was commissioned to paint for a New York City restaurant in the 1950s. $13-$18, coloradomtn.edu

JAS Café: The Pedrito Martinez Group
 
7 & 9:15 p.m., Cooking School of Aspen

Afro-Latin hand percussionist Pedro Pablo Martinez (a.k.a. Pedrito) has won a Thelonius Monk Award and performed with the likes of Paul Simon, Bruce Springstein, Sting, and Wynton Marsalis. In 2005, he formed the New York-based the Pedrito Martinez Group. Since then, the band has come out with two albums that have gained major recognition from critics and fans. $45 show only, $110 show with dinner, jazzaspensnowmass.org

Arthur Miller’s The Price

A 2018 Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Film, The Insult is a powerful story about an argument that leads to a court battle between Tony, a Lebanese Christian, and Yasser, a Palestinian refugee. Alliance Film Series: Saturday Church

The film relates the story of a 14-year-old boy named Ulysses who's struggling with both his father’s death and his gender identity. He finds a community that understands through Saturday Church, a program for LGBTQ youth. He begins to live a double life, leading him to question what he cares about most and the best way to be truthful about who he is. Following the screening will be a live Skype discussion with director Damon Cardasis and actor Luka Kain, led by Aspen Film’s Executive Director Susan Wrubel.
