Aspen Weekend Agenda: September 28–30, 2018

This weekend features a little running, a little biking, and a whole lot of cultural stimulation with films, theater, and music.

This is the final weekend to view the exhibit about Hunter S. Thompson's run for sheriff at the Wheeler/Stallard Museum. 

Friday, September 28

Historic Downtown Walking Tour of Aspen
10:30 a.m., Wheeler Opera House
Even if you think you know everything about town, you’re sure to learn something new on this two-hour guided walking tour of the historic buildings, sites, and stories around every corner in downtown Aspen. $15/adult, $12/senior, children 18 and under free, aspenhistory.org

Freak Power: Hunter Thompson's Campaign for Sheriff
11 a.m.–5 p.m., Wheeler/Stallard Museum
This is the final weekend to see this exhibit featuring original campaign materials, photographs, and political art. The Wheeler/Stallard is open on Saturday as well. $10 adults/$8 seniors/ Free for children 18 and under and active military personnel, aspenhistory.org  

2018 Aspen Filmfest
12 p.m., Isis Theatre, Wheeler Opera House, Crystal Theatre

For 40 years, this annual fest has screened independent features and documentaries, and previewed some of fall's most buzzworthy movies. Programming runs in both Aspen and Carbondale. Active Art

Equus
7:30 p.m., Thunder River Theatre Company, Carbondale
Written by Peter Shaffer and directed by Corey Simpson, the 1975 Tony Award winner for Best Play is brought to life by Thunder River Theatre Company. In this darkly dramatic piece, psychiatrist Martin Dysart seeks to uncover the basis of a 17-year-old's violent and religious obsession with horses. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
7:30 p.m., Glenwood Vaudeville Revue, Glenwood Springs
This comedic musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, is inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus. It also shows at the same time on Saturday and Sunday. $30, gvrshow.com

Friday Night Movies: Remember the Titans
7:30 p.m., Aspen Recreation Center (outside in the yard next to the pool)

Maria Muldaur
8 p.m., The Temporary, Basalt

Eminence Ensemble

CASA Superhero Run
8:30 a.m., Crown Mountain Park, El Jebel
Hosted by CASA (court appointed special advocates), this 5K run on the Crown Mountain Loop and surrounding trails encourages runners to wear costumes (because every child needs a hero, but abused children need a superhero). A Kids' Fun Run covers one lap around the Crown Mountain Park loop. $30 for the 5K/$10 for the Kids Fun Run, facebook.com

Snowmass Loop MTB Fondo
9 a.m., New Belgium Ranger Station, Snowmass Village Mall
Returning for the third year (and rescheduled from a rainy day in August), this race course showcases the Snowmass Loop, with 26-plus miles of singletrack circumnavigating Snowmass Village. It also has 4,000 feet of ascending and descending to keep things interesting. $25, free to any student with a valid high school I.D., www.rfmba.org

Get out and enjoy the Lost Forest before it shuts down for the season.

Victorian West End Walking Tour

First Annual Oktoberfest Fundraiser

Sunday Crafternoon
