Aspen Weekend Agenda: October 5–7, 2018

Running and eating for a good cause, films for powder hounds, and generally enjoying the season are our top picks for this weekend.

Friday, October 5

Give a Flake Cocktail Party & Photo Gallery Featuring Jeremy Swanson
4–6 p.m., Limelight Lounge, Aspen
In celebration of The Meeting Film Fest and #GiveAFlake, be among the first to view Jeremy Swanson’s latest photography project, featuring incredible macro shots of local snowflakes. There will be complimentary pizza and beer, as well as a silent auction to purchase prints, with all proceeds going to Protect Our Winters Action Fund. Free, aspensnowmass.com

Stand at the Summit
5–7 p.m., McClure Pass
Wilderness Workshop, Western Slope Conservation Center, and High Country Conservation Advocates host this second annual campfire gathering to show unity in defending local public lands from the impacts of oil and gas development on both sides of McClure Pass. Fall First Friday and Homecoming
5–9 p.m., downtown Carbondale
Eat, drink, socialize, and be merry at the kick-off to a celebratory weekend in Carbondale. There's even a kids' only movie night at KDNK (5:30–8 p.m). For $20 (proceeds benefit KDNK and the Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program), children ages 6–12 can enjoy pizza, popcorn, and a movie screening, while parents enjoy other First Friday activities. Spaghetti Dinner to benefit Aspen Hope Center

The Meeting Film Fest: All In and Would You
7 p.m., Wheeler Opera House
This double-header evening of hard-charging ski films by Jeremy Pancras Visuals and Matchstick Productions is part of the 14th annual Film Fest in conjunction with The Meeting presented by Rylo. $20, wheeleroperahouse.com

7:30 p.m., Thunder River Theatre Company, Carbondale

Written by Peter Shaffer and directed by Corey Simpson, the 1975 Tony Award winner for Best Play is brought to life by Thunder River Theatre Company. In this darkly dramatic piece, psychiatrist Martin Dysart seeks to uncover the basis of a 17-year-old's violent and religious obsession with horses. $30 for adults 40+/$20 for adults ages 10–39/$15 for full-time students with I.D., app.arts–people.com 

Aspen Darkside Ghost Tour
8 p.m., Historic downtown Aspen
The scent of pumpkin spice wafts through the air, and the leaves are in their last phase of changing colors, so why not get in the spooky spirit on a 60-minute walking tour that shares true stories of ghosts, murder, and mayhem dating back to 1879? Saturday, October 6

Chuck Severy 5K Cross Country Challenge
8 a.m., Aspen High School
Come participate in the 2018 Chuck Severy 5k Cross Country Challenge and relive your high school running experience (or realize you should have run in high school)! This is a benefit fundraiser for the AHS Cross Country Running Teams. After the race you can run the Caring for Community 10K (next listing) for a double header, or you can stay and watch the high school cross country teams compete.  facebook.com

Caring for Community 10K Race
9 a.m., Wagner Park
The Limelight Hotel Aspen and the Aspen Skiing Company are putting on this 10K race (formerly known as the Town and Trail 10K). The new incarnation raises money for SkiCo's Caring for Community Fund, which helps to support local humanitarian nonprofits and organizations. $53 registration, aspensnowmass.com

Women's Self-Defense and Empowerment Class for the Aspen Hope Center
10 a.m.–12 p.m., Rocky Mountain Martial Arts Studio
Ava Mackie, an 11th grader at Aspen High, teaches this class with Master Jen Gibbons for ages 12+. Be prepared to feel empowered. $25 minimum registration fee (all proceeds go to the Aspen Hope Center), ourhopecenter.org

Potato Day Festival
9:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m., Sopris Park, Carbondale
Carbondale's oldest community event (since 1909) celebrates the town's ties to its one-time signature crop with a parade down Main Street, farmers market, kids' activities, live music, and a lunch of BBQ and baked potatoes with toppings. Free, carbondale.com  

Mallfest–42 Years of Cobblestone & Community
11–2 p.m., Aspen Pedestrian Mall
In honor of the City of Aspen's Pedestrian Mall being named a Great American Place by the American Planning Association, the community is invited to celebrate with ’70s throwback activities, sidewalk sales, acknowledgement of the award, and a noon ribbon cutting with cake for the first 100 people. Bring a receipt dated 10/6/18 from any business in Aspen to the ACRA booth between 11am–2pm and  be entered to win one of more than $5,000 in prizes. Cemetery Tour–Walk with the Dead

The Meeting presented by Rylo: The NESPA Awards

Shining Mountains Film Festival has two programs on Sunday and continues on Monday with Program 3 at 3:30 p.m.

Shining Mountains Film Festival is Aspen’s first Native American film festival. In honor of Aspen’s second year of declaring the second Monday in October “Indigenous Peoples Day”, festival programming explores the breadth of Native American life through shorts and feature films. $15 per program, wheeleroperahouse.com

Sunday Night Football
