This Performer and Aspen Ski Instructor Sings to Change the World
“I love being outside every day, and I love performing,” says local Sonya Meyer. “I thought, ‘I can combine this and sing about my love for the mountains.’” Hence, the gifted performer (and ski instructor) developed A Day of Sky: A Cabaret for Climate Change with support from Carbondale’s Thunder River Theatre Company. Part personal narrative, part call to action, the format allows Meyer, 29, to share through stories and songs (Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Stephen Sondheim, and more) her passion for the natural environment and her concern over its ongoing degradation.
The show’s hardly a downer, though, as Meyer, who has a knack for physical comedy, includes a couple of hilarious song parodies. She’ll reprise the performance, which was directed by Aspen theater vet Nina Gabianelli and features David Dyer on piano, at the Snowmass Collective on March 15. Join her in lifting your voice—Meyer leads the audience in singing “Blowin’ in the Wind,” with a wink toward a “Kumbaya” moment—and you’re apt to leave on a more upbeat note. $20, thecollectivesnowmass.com
