Aspen Shortsfest

One of North America’s premier short-film festivals, Shortsfest 2019 screens almost 70 animation, documentary, and live-action films in its Oscar-qualifying international competition, followed by filmmaker Q&As after each program and other events. A rare feature presentation on Saturday afternoon (2:15 p.m., Wheeler) screens Destin Daniel Cretton’s 2013 film Short Term 12, followed by a conversation with the director; the project came out of a short that played at Shortsfest 2009. Cretton has also just been named the director of Marvel Studios’ upcoming film Shang-Chi. Young film buffs shouldn’t miss the family-centric program on Sunday at noon at the Wheeler. The Après

This new weekend music fest, a collab between Aspen SkiCo and Belly Up Aspen, brings some of the jam-band world’s favorite acts to the base of the mountain for a season-ending celebration of snow and song. Umphrey’s McGee starts things off Friday evening, with the Main Squeeze and Moon Taxi opening. Saturday features Southern Avenue, followed by the String Cheese Incident. The fest closes Sunday eve with an encore performance by String Cheese, with ALO opening. Meanwhile, on Saturday and Sunday from 12–2 p.m., Mountain Meadow (Sundeck at Aspen Mountain), the Sweet Lillies (Cliffhouse at Buttermilk), Chain Station (Elk Camp at Snowmass), and John Cumming and Bunch of Strangers (Merry-Go-Round at Aspen Highlands) play free sets across all four mountains. Comedian Ben Roy

After killing it during a previous show here, Roy returns with a fresh set of his signature edgy, rant-filled material. Aside from his stand-up act (and side gig playing with his punk band), Roy—along with Adam Cayton-Holland (who performed at The Temporary on Valentine’s Day) and Andrew Orvedahl—stars in the hit TruTV series Those Who Can’t. History on Tap: Skiing Hayden, 1937

At this special on-mountain presentation, historian and actor Mike Monroney performs as Billy Fiske, an Olympic bobsledder in 1928 and 1932 who was also among a trio of visionaries aiming to develop a ski resort on Mount Hayden, near Ashcroft.
