Woody Creek

The legendary Woody Creek Tavern

Most people know Woody Creek for its eponymous tavern—the margarita- and burrito-slinging joint where gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson held sway at the bar. In summer, flocks of cyclists ride 8 miles down the Rio Grande Trail from Aspen to lunch at the restaurant, then taxi or shuttle back to town. But for homeowners desiring peace and quiet, Woody Creek defines modern-day ranch living, from large legacy properties to smaller, gentleman ranches.
In addition to those seeking a rural vibe, the inspiring landscape has drawn a fair share of musicians over the years, including Glenn Frey, Ringo Starr, Jimmy Ibbotson, and John Oates (whose five-bedroom house on 4.3 acres is on the market for $4.6 million).
To serve the population of fewer than 300, the town’s commercial center consists of the tavern, a guide service, a post office, and a fire station.
Below the tavern, the Roaring Fork River winds its way through a narrow canyon. It was the river that drew Paula Kadison to move here from Aspen’s West End 10 years ago. “It is like a retreat from the hubbub, just far enough away from everything, but not too far,” she says. “I can run out the door and be on the bike path or jump on my bicycle and head downvalley or up into the hills.”
