The W Aspen, built from scratch on the site of the former Sky Hotel, will open in mid-July after two years of construction. Curious? So were we. The hotel’s general manager, Greg Durrer, shared with us what to look for.

1. A striking egg-shape pod, designed to resemble a silver nugget, hangs suspended over the lobby. Inside the pod … a DJ booth.

2. Local celebrated architecture firm Rowland and Broughton designed the modern chalet; in-demand New York firm Nemaworkshop did all of the interiors.

3. The 8,000-square-foot rooftop pool area (or the Wet Deck, in W parlance) features a full bar, cabanas, firepits, an oversize hot tub, and the aforementioned pool, along with an up-close view of Aspen Mountain. Better yet, it’s open to the public.

4. Instead of parallel beds, double queen rooms have a tiered setup; along one wall, one bed sits behind the other, elevated on a platform that also provides extra storage for bulky items. The unique arrangement allows for more open floor space, too. Dance party, anyone?

5. 39°, which Durrer calls an “ultra-lounge,” evokes Aspen’s long-ago red-light district—located where the hotel now sits—with bordello-inspired décor trended up by craft cocktails and a menu of shareable eats. And, of course, the moniker reflects the name of the much-loved lounge and après-ski party spot in the Sky Hotel.
