With so many people going uphill at our ski areas, it’s easy to forget that perfectly good lifts serve the slopes. But the fitness trend of skinning up on Alpine touring or telemark gear shows no abating, as skiers enjoy a great workout, and often some social time, with the reward of skiing down.

New this year, Four Mountain Sports, with stores at each mountain, rents performance-oriented Dynafit gear ($77 daily): versatile SpeedFit 84 skis outfitted with superlight Radical 2 tech bindings and medium-flexing Radical boots.

Try them during the new Friday Morning Uphill Breakfast Club (through Mar 20), when Buttermilk’s Cliffhouse restaurant sells hot goodies (8:30–10 a.m.)—a different kind of reward for the hike up.
