DanceAspen
In just five years, DanceAspen has gone from startup to cultural mainstay. What do you think has been the key to DanceAspen’s staying power and success?
When you’ve got nothing to lose, incredible things can happen. DanceAspen was born from a moment of uncertainty when a group of artists came together to build something new. We were learning how to form a company, the community took a leap of faith to join us in laying this new foundation, and together we turned uncertainty into a movement. Today, we are a company of artists built by artists, for artists, and for the community we love. That spirit of collaboration and courage continues to shape who we are and attract the best and brightest talent to DanceAspen.
In what ways do you think DanceAspen proves that world-class contemporary dance can thrive outside of major cities?
I think there is a misconception that only big cities produce world-class art. Art doesn’t need tall buildings and a bustling metro. Art needs passion, vision, and a community that believes in the power of creativity. This along with Aspen’s rich cultural history created the perfect incubator for DanceAspen to grow and thrive as a world class company.
DanceAspen has brought movement directly into local schools—Something this valley hasn’t seen at this scale before. Why is that outreach so important to your mission?
We want to keep Aspen dancing, across all generations. Having a creative outlet is essential to young people’s mental and emotional well-being. Movement helps us process feelings, find joy in our bodies, and build resilience. By bringing dance into schools at this scale, we’re not only nurturing the next generation of artists, but also helping shape healthier, more confident, and inspired humans.
