The 3-D printed footbeds

Spend just a few minutes talking to Eric Ward of the Foot Foundation and you’ll learn plenty about the physiology of feet. For instance, did you know that 90 percent of us can’t functionally balance on one foot? Or that we all pronate and supinate? (It’s a misconception that we do just one or the other.)

It’s why ski boot-fitters have such a large pool to draw from for clients. And now Ward—whose business card reads “Magic Carpet repair man”—offers a streamlined version of a process that usually takes at least a couple of hours of face time. After coming to your house or hotel to take measurements, he—presto!—produces fully custom footbeds from a 3-D printer and delivers them back to you, usually within 24 hours.

With just 15 to 20 minutes required for measuring and another 15 on the back end to make sure the footbed fits properly, “I’m trying to give people their vacation time back,” says Ward. $350 per pair, footfoundation.com
