Fashionable Furnaces

Stylish Substitutes

The puffy down jacket has achieved ski-town ubiquity for good reason: mountain towns are cold; puffies are warm.

Still, looking like the bastard child of the Michelin Man doesn’t always fit the style bill in Aspen.

To stray only slightly from the classic ski-town look, consider Patagonia’s Interlodge ($599 at the Patagonia store in Snowmass). It’s more urban in silhouette and color (black or gray), yet beneath its subtle exterior lurk Gore-Tex and 600-fill goose down. Think of it as a high-tech puffy gone incognito.

For those willing to venture further from feathered insulation, Filson, opening a store on Hunter Street in December, got its start making wool jackets and blankets for Alaska’s gold rushers in the late 1800s. The Double Mackinaw Cruiser ($415) takes an already very warm coat (Filson’s Mackinaw) and adds a second layer of wool. The result? A wearable furnace that still looks sleek.
