What role in the local community does Aspen Film envision for the Isis Theater?

Aspen Film plans to transform the Isis Theater into a central hub for the community—a space where locals and visitors can experience film, education, and diverse cultural programming. The reimagined Isis Theater will be more than a movie venue; it’s intended as a gathering place for people of all ages to connect, learn, and engage. The vision includes expanding beyond traditional screenings to feature workshops, interactive Q+As, and special events that celebrate the arts. As Katherine Chapin, Aspen Film’s new board chair, noted, “We want the Isis to be an inspiring community space that reflects Aspen’s passion for creativity and connection.”

How will the planned updates to the Isis Theater enhance its role and offerings?

The transformation involves significant upgrades, including modern sound and projection technology, adding a flexible multi-use space, and improved accessibility—all designed to create a premier cinematic experience. Chapin explained that these improvements aim to respect the theater’s historic character while elevating it to meet modern expectations. “The Isis will honor its legacy while providing a world-class experience,” she remarked. With these enhancements, Aspen Film hopes the theater will become a must-visit destination for both residents and visitors, further enriching Aspen’s cultural landscape.

How can the community support Aspen Film’s vision for the Isis Theater?

Aspen Film invites the community to help bring this vision to life through volunteer efforts, fundraising, and supporting programs such as educational outreach and summer camps. This inclusive approach aims to make the Isis a true community resource.

Susan Wrubel, Aspen Film’s executive and artistic director, expressed her excitement for the project, saying, “The Isis transformation is a testament to our commitment to Aspen and to film. We’re building something the entire community can be proud of and engaged with.” The theater’s transformation also aligns closely with Aspen Film’s “Independent by Nature” mission, as it will provide a dedicated space for independent film, arts education, and community engagement, reinforcing Aspen’s commitment to film and culture.
